Celebrate World Food Day With Healthy Autumn Recipes
Published 6 months ago • 3 min read
Hello my friend!
The chagim may be behind us, but there are still reasons to celebrate! The hostages are home, and I'm sure we're all breathing a big sigh of relief.
I feel like it's now possible to fully embrace and enjoy occasions for celebration - and I'll be keeping an eye out for more of them! For instance, did you know that today (October 16) is World Food Day? It celebrates the founding of the UNFAO in 1945, and highlights its work towards creating a peaceful, sustainable, prosperous, and food-secure future for all. They work to ensure that everyone has access to a healthy diet, living in harmony with the planet.
It's hard to argue with healthy, sustainable food for all! Let's take a moment today to think about where your food has come from, and thank the people who worked hard to get it from a seed all the way to your plate.
Fast and healthy
I love recipes that are quick and easy, and produce tasty and nutritious results. Munching something delicious that I know is also nourishing my body is honestly one of my favourite activities!
Below are some tried-and-tested recipes that definitely meet the criteria above. Made from scratch using wholesome ingredients, they're packed with flavour, and will make you feel better for eating them.
Let's celebrate healthy food and enjoy it every day!
Helping others to eat well
If World Food Day inspires you to help other people gain access to good food, please consider supporting your local food bank, or one of the following charities, if you are able to.
Leket Israel - they rescue healthy, surplus food from hotels, restaurants etc, and deliver it to those in need across Israel.
GIFT - deliver kosher food parcels and freshly cooked nutritious meals to recipients in London, Manchester and Israel.
The Chicken Soup Shelter - provides hot, kosher, nutritious meals, 6 days a week year-round, to anyone who walks through their doors.
Pleeeease don't eat that etrog!
I want to reiterate my plea that you NOT eat your etrog (or anyone else's!) after Succot. If you want to use it, please do something non-edible instead. Etrogim sold for ritual purposes are considered to be 'ornamental botanicals' by law, and are not covered by the stricter rules on pesticides that apply to food products. Many etrogim have been heavily sprayed with agricultural chemicals, which accumulate in the rind - the part most often used in recipes.
Below are some of my favourite quick, easy and deliciously healthy recipes. Enjoy! And happy World Food Day to one and all 🤩
Extra creamy oatmeal porridge I'm so ready for hot breakfasts! This indulgent and creamy bowl of porridge is packed with beta-glucans and dietary fibre. Top with fresh fruit and nuts for an extra boost!
Miso tahini pasta This super-quick pasta dish offers protein and essential minerals from the tahini and gut-friendly probiotics (and amazing depth of flavour!) from he miso.
Feel-good fish curry Succulent fish and vegetables in a gently spiced coconut milk broth makes a wonderful nourishing dinner on a cold Autumn evening.
Aubergine shakshuka This rich and filling veg-packed take on Shakshuka just needs some sourdough or pita for dipping and you're all set. A great mid-week meal that's ready in 30 minutes.
Lemon sole, green bean and tomato tray bake I love a meal where everything cooks together to tasty perfection! This fish and vegetable tray bake is just such a dinner, and is great with some boiled potatoes or simple grains.

Family, friends and food are three of life’s most important things. Let’s celebrate them!

Hello again my friend! With just a few days to go until Pesach, this week I want to focus on the things that people really seem to struggle with. Those seem to be breakfasts, and finding things for Pesach that children will willingly eat. My response to both of these things is really the same, and that is, do whatever works! There are no 'rules' around what is an acceptable breakfast food and what isn't, or even that you MUST eat breakfast at all. So if you find something that works for you...
Hello there my friend! Apologies for no newsletters for the last couple of weeks. You may remember that I was unwell at the start of the year, and apparently, I'm not as recovered as I thought I was 😞. So this time I'm taking it even easier... if that's possible with just a couple of weeks till Pesach 😲 Fortunately, I have my guide to a stress-free Pesach to remind me that this holiday doesn't have to be overwhelming! If you need a reminder about what's important and what's just 'nice to...
Hello there my friend, The joyful festival of Purim starts on Monday evening. One of the special mitzvot of Purim is giving mishloach manot - gifts of food and drink - to friends and family. Each person should give one or more gifts containing at least two ready-to-consume items. This means that there's plenty of scope around what to include and how many gifts to give. Giving mishloach manot is probably my favourite Purim activity! Each year I choose a theme and create gift bags with an...
