Twas the night before Pesach...

Hello again my friend!

With just a few days to go until Pesach, this week I want to focus on the things that people really seem to struggle with. Those seem to be breakfasts, and finding things for Pesach that children will willingly eat.

My response to both of these things is really the same, and that is, do whatever works! There are no 'rules' around what is an acceptable breakfast food and what isn't, or even that you MUST eat breakfast at all. So if you find something that works for you (or your children), just roll with it for a few days until you can eat your regular chametz breakfast again. Same with other meals - avoid the readymade, over-processed foods and offer a variety of different fruits, vegetables, proteins etc. If your kids just eat cucumber and smoked salmon for a week... they'll survive! Chill out, serve what they're prepared to eat, and go back to normal menus after the chag.

Some suggestions for easy Pesach breakfasts:

  • Matza with butter, jam, nut butter, cheese etc.
  • Omelettes, with or without cheese and/or vegetables
  • Yogurt, maybe with sliced fruit, nuts, or a coconut macaroon crumbled over the top
  • Last night's dinner leftovers (cold or reheated)
  • Pesach cake, brownies, cookies etc - not the healthiest but if it fills you up till lunchtime, that's still OK as an occasional choice.

One of our favourite Pesach breakfast recipes is this overnight matza breakfast bake, which is also usually a massive hit with picky children. You can assemble it the night before and then just pop it in to bake in the morning, for a light, sweet, custardy and delicious start to the day.

Pesach meal planning

If you're curious what we'll be eating here at FFF towers during Pesach, here's some idea of what's in store:

Breakfast is everyone for themselves! See list above...

Lunch will be some combination of mixed salad plus cheese, fishballs, smoked salmon, eggs etc + matza and/or potato crisps.

Dinners will be simple, seasonal meals that go heavy on the fresh veg, but will likely include some of the following:

And while I probably won't have the energy to make them, I'm hoping to persuade the resident teenager to cook up a batch of potato gnocchi so we can all get our 'pasta' fix!

Shabbat Shalom

Wishing you a relaxing Shabbat before the final Pesach preparations begin! May we all be blessed with peace, health, happiness, and many reasons to celebrate.

Wishing you and yours a very Good Shabbos - Shabbat Shalom! - and a joyful and delicious Pesach.

With love to everyone,
Helen x.

Hello there my friend! Apologies for no newsletters for the last couple of weeks. You may remember that I was unwell at the start of the year, and apparently, I'm not as recovered as I thought I was 😞. So this time I'm taking it even easier... if that's possible with just a couple of weeks till Pesach 😲 Fortunately, I have my guide to a stress-free Pesach to remind me that this holiday doesn't have to be overwhelming! If you need a reminder about what's important and what's just 'nice to...

Hello there my friend, The joyful festival of Purim starts on Monday evening. One of the special mitzvot of Purim is giving mishloach manot - gifts of food and drink - to friends and family. Each person should give one or more gifts containing at least two ready-to-consume items. This means that there's plenty of scope around what to include and how many gifts to give. Giving mishloach manot is probably my favourite Purim activity! Each year I choose a theme and create gift bags with an...
