Healthier snacks (for kids and adults!) PLUS what's fresh in August
Published about 1 year agoΒ β’Β 2 min read
Hello there my friend!
It's very very nearly August, so this week I'm looking ahead to all the fresh and delicious produce that the new month will bring with it. We can look forward to:
Fruitsβ Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Cherries π, Damsons, Greengages π, Plums, Raspberries, Redcurrants and Strawberries π. Plus early varieties of apples π and pears π are starting to put in an appearance.
Spend some time at your local market or greengrocer to get the best selection! Or buy direct if you have a farm shop nearby.
Healthy snacking
Now that school's out for Summer, there's a lot more snacking going on around here! Active, growing children (and their friends!) seem to be constantly hungry. And I don't know about you, but I do find it hard to make a snack for someone else without having a little something myself...
So, below are some of my favourite easy, nutritious and tasty snacks! Beloved by kids and adults alike, these will help keep hunger at bay between meals. Hurrah!

Deliciously healthy holiday snacks
Simple to make, delicious snack foods that even fussy teens will enjoy. And nutritious too - what's not to love?!
βSeed and nut brittleβ I keep a box of this in the freezer at all times, so I can easily reach for a shard of this sweet, crunchy, oh-so-moreish snack. So easy and packed with fibre, protein and vitamins!
βOatmeal cookies with coconut & cranberriesβ These delicious cookies have a wonderful flavour from the coconut, and slow release energy from the oats. Use cranberries for a sweet-tart tang or whichever dried fruits you prefer.
βNo-bake Nutella bitesβ Made with oats and puffed rice, the only sugar in these comes from the Nutella, and each little treat is just 41 calories. Have two!
βBanana flapjacks with apricots and dark chocoateβ Flapjacks are one of my most favourite bakes, and these have banana, dried apricots, and a drizzle of dark chocolate. Delicious and conveniently portable too.
βEasy focaccia in one hourβ If you prefer a savoury snack, this quick and easy focaccia is the business! Eat it warm with some olive oil, or make a more substantial snack with dips and spreads. You can also go wild with the toppings before baking to make 'loaded' focaccia.
βBeetroot humousβ Another delicous savoury option that's full of protein, healthy fats and fibre. Enjoy it with focaccia (above) or scoop onto tortilla chips, crisps or vegetable sticks for extra nutrition.
βEasy vegan soda breadβ βSo simple, this tasty quickbread is delicious with butter and a slice of cheese. Just enough to put you on till dinnertime.
βFlower toast aka 'egg in the basket'β βA bit more substantial, but this upgraded egg on toast is quick and easy to make, and looks so pretty!
Other easy snacks include sliced fruits, vegetables and cheeses, hardboiled eggs, roasted nuts, popcorn, plus seedy crackers or breadsticks. Keep a stash in the fridge/cupboard for a grab-and-go snack whenever you need one!
If you're fasting on Sunday for Tisha B'Av, I hope you have a meaningful fast.
And before that, here's wishing you and yours Shabbat Shalom - Good Shabbos! I hope this Shabbat brings peace, happiness, health and many blessings to us all.
With love, Helen x.
