Call your mother! ☎️

Hello again my friend!

This Sunday is Mothers Day, and while it's not a Jewish holiday, it is nice to have an opportunity to focus on our Mums, Grandmas and the other special women in our lives.

Unfortunately, my Mum and Grandmas are no longer around, but I do have many of their wonderful recipes to remember them by! And of course lots of photographs and memories. Here are some of my favourite 'inherited' recipes, which I will certainly be handing on to my own daughter.

  • Grandma's stick-to-your-ribs soup
This hearty and delicious soup is a meal in a bowl! Made with dried pulses and barley, it's a hearty and filling dish.
  • Dried fruit compote
Naturally sweet, this lovely compote is great for breakfast or dessert. It's a Pesach classic that's good all year!
  • Egg and onion

This classic Ashkenazi appetiser has numerous variations, but this is just how my Mum used to make it. (So it's the best!)
  • Gantze tsimmes with helzel topping

I veganised my Grandma's tsimmes recipe and this was the happy result - a tasty, hearty, one pot dinner.
  • Dutch ginger cake squares
This recipe was originally from a Great Aunt, but became one of my Mum's best-known and best-loved cakes. So yummy!
  • Mum's lokshen kugel with apple

A Shabbat regular growing up, this lovely pudding with its sweet, fruity apple layer is still a family favourite.
  • Potato and carrot layer bake

I love this potato and carrot layer bake because it’s dead easy, delicious, and you get your spuds and veg all in one go. Perfect!

If you're looking to make a delicious home-made gift for your Mum (or someone else) then how about this super-fruity chocolate tiffin? This close to Pesach, it's a great way to use up odds and ends of biscuits, open packets of dried fruit and other items that need finishing. Win-win!

Pesach recipe collections

With so many Pesach recipes about, sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming. I've gathered together favourite recipes into curated collections, that make browsing a little easier and more focused. Every recipe in these collections is tried and tested, and well loved by my family! Bookmark these pages, then it will be easy to find:

And if you're after specifically vegan Pesach recipes, you'll find over 40 of them, arranged by category, in my vegan Pesach survival guide.

If you missed it last week, here's another chance to grab my secrets of a stress-free Pesach. And to help with planning and shopping lists, here's the list of items that don't need a Pesach hechsher.

Shabbat Shalom

A busy weekend this, with Mothers Day, the clocks going forward, and no doubt a lot more besides. It's also Jewish Women's Aid's match-funded "The Ripple Effect" fundraising event, so keep an eye out for how you can support this amazing charity, and have your donation doubled to help even more women and girls.

May this Shabbat bring peace, health, happiness and many blessings to everyone. Shabbat Shalom - Good Shabbos! - to one and all.

With love, Helen x.
